Description of Item: 30cm in Height and glazed inside to hold water.
Karin Abedian works from her studio in Constantia, Cape Town and her deep love of Africa, its diverse People, Fauna and Flora is a constant inspiration.
After matriculating at Pro Arte school in Pretoria she studied Drama at UCT but returned to her first love mainly Fine Art and did a diploma at Ruth Prowse in Cape Town where she majored in sculpture under Maureen Langley.
It was her love of working in clay that got her exploring Ceramics in Johannesburg where she worked with Caroline Shultz Viera and Lorette Espi in Cape Town where she refined the art of Raku and Sagar firing.
Karin has been working in clay for over 15 years now and is fond of using scraffito (the technique of scratching into leather hard clay) in her free hand drawings usually depicting natural or organic shapes. Although she throws on the wheel at times, it is the ancient coiling, hand building technique that she is most attracted to as the shape and volume are more organic and reminiscent of her sculptures.
Karin is also a painter and her life drawing experience is evident in the free hand decorating of her ceramics.
It has been commented that her work is very joyful and has a freedom about it!
Karin has had various exhibitions at:
- Steward Gallery,
- Upstairs@ Bamboo
- POPup in Johannesburg.
- Investment art – Julie Miller
She has had sellout exhibitions at Art in the Forest, Cape Town and the Turbine Art Fair in Newtown, Johannesburg.
She has had a Solo Exhibition in 2016 at the Julie Miller Investment Art Gallery in the Mall of Africa, Johannesburg and has private clients both locally and internationally.
Her work is also found in Corporate Collections both locally and internationally.
