Description of Item:
Oil on Canvas
Size: 90cm x 100cm
I began my painting career in 1972. Having initially strived for likeness and reality whilst navigating the techniques and methodology of oil painting, I found that often a painting that was progressing well suddenly took a downward turn as it became tighter and more defined. I stubbornly avoided anything that remotely suggested abstract art and would eschew any such work as belonging in the domain of incompetent painters. However, I was to learn that quite the opposite is true.
Gradually as I made mistakes, of which there were many, I found unexpected results that seemed to enhance rather than destroy my paintings and this led me to explore the realm of the abstract. My sincere apologies to all you abstract painters, for whom I have a new respect. Contrary to my belief that anyone could throw together an abstract work, as I explored this discipline it was clear this was no fools playground but an exacting and exciting arena to be explored and embraced.
My work is still rooted in realism but it is my hope that by incorporating the abstract and leaving parts unresolved it allows the viewer to participate in the final interpretation of the subject in order to imbue a sense of collaboration and ownership in the work.
